Grob Aircraft - The G 120TP has proven to be a popular choice for military training and is used by 11 countries. It is powered by a Rolls-Royce M250-B17F turboprop, which offers 456 shp for take-off and 380 shp at maximum cruising power.
The engine can be limited to 312 shp to cater for ab initio training requirements. The trainer has a maximum operating speed of 235 knots and stall speed of 57 knots, and is rated for +6/-4g for aerobatic training.

It features a modern cockpit with two large multifunction displays for both instructor and student. The primary flight controls and switches are integrated to the right side of the cockpit to fly the aircraft with a right hand stick and a left hand throttle, which enables to transit easily to fast jet aircraft.

The G115E is of semi-monocoque design. It was designed to execute pilot screening, elementary flight training (EFT) and aerobatics maneuvers throughout the UK. The robust landing gear design allowed the aircraft to accomplish harsh training even in the worst climatic conditions.
The Grob G115E is powered by a single Lycoming AEIO-360-B1F/B piston engine that produces 139kW of output power. The engine is designed and manufactured by Textron Lycoming Engines, US. It is a four-cylinder air-cooled engine driven by a three-bladed constant speed MT propeller made of aluminum.

The G115E features a robust and corrosion-resistant all-composite airframe made of carbon composite materials. It is equipped with a fixed tricycle landing gear, empennage, battery switch, ignition switch, stop watch, static selector, lighting panel, mute switch and parking brake.
Acquiring the G 120TP is the first of a two-phase modernization of Sweden's military pilot training program. Sweden has sought a new basic trainer to replace the SK 60 for some time, but the procurement program was postponed several times due mainly to budgetary constraints.
A renewed effort began in 2019/20, leading to the release of a request for tenders in April 2020. Further G 120TP purchases could be made. Some menu selections include a generic aircraft model, as well as more specific variants of that airliner.

The 14 and 12 G115Es procured respectively by UAS and AFT are deployed for elementary flight training. The Central Flying School has deployed the G115Es to execute weapon system officer training at the RAF College Cranwell.

In the second phase of the plan Sweden intends to acquire an advanced jet trainer, the Boeing T-7A Red Hawk—in which Saab is the main industrial partner—being a strong candidate. In the meantime, SK 60s will continue to handle advanced elements of the syllabus, possibly augmented in the mid-2020s by JAS 39D Gripen two-seaters as an interim solution pending the entry into service of the new advanced trainer.
The G115E is owned and operated by Babcock on behalf of the UK Ministry of Defense who renamed the aircraft Tutor. In May 2011 Babcock contracted Lees Avionics to overhaul its 93 G115E trainers. The TAS600 traffic advisory system and horizontal situational indicator (HSI) was installed in the aircraft as part of the contract.
The development of G115 began in the 1980s to meet the flight training requirements of the RAF University Air Squadrons (UAS) and Air Experience Flights (AEF). The aircraft was built based on its predecessor G112's prototype.

The aircraft weighs around 685kg and its maximum take-off weight is 990kg. Swedish defense procurement agency Försvarets materielverk (FMV) has signed an order with Grob Aircraft of Germany for the supply of a military training system based on the G 120TP trainer aircraft.
The deal covers seven aircraft, simulators, and other computer-based training aids, along with flight safety equipment. Grob will also provide line and heavy maintenance. To be designated SK 40 in Swedish air force service, the G 120TP will undertake the Grundläggande flygutbildningen (GFU) basic training phase at Malmen airbase near Linköping. Currently, the training is undertaken using the Saab SK 60 jet trainer.
Despite having undergone a series of upgrades the SK 60s are nearing the end of their useful lives, with the type having been in service since 1967. The G115E can climb at a rate of 5.3m/s.
The maximum and cruise speeds of the aircraft are 343km/h and 230km/h respectively. The stall speed is 96km/h. The range and service ceiling are 1,150km and 3,050m respectively. The RAF awarded a contract to Avidyne Corporation in November 2010 to supply 119 TAS600 traffic advisory systems, as well as spare parts for deployment in the G115E aircraft.
Babcock International will install the traffic advisory system in the G115E by 2012. Deliveries of the G 120TP to Sweden are due to begin in May 2022, with the first aircraft undergoing clearance trials with the FMV.
Handover to the air force is expected in the first quarter of 2023 to begin the training of instructors. The training of new students is due to start in summer 2024.
